What’s the link between gum disease and heart disease? Could gum disease treatment extend life expectancy? Gum disease has been associated with various conditions including heart disease, kidney disease and arthritis. Prof. Thomas Dietrich (MPH 2002) will walk us through the latest evidence for these associations and discuss some of the scientific challenges and controversies in this field.

Professor Thomas Dietrich Dr. med., Dr. med. dent., MPH’02, FDS RCPS
Prof. Thomas Dietrich studied Dentistry and Medicine at Charité, Humboldt University in Berlin. He trained as an Oral Surgeon and worked with the Departments of Periodontology and Oral Surgery at Charité Berlin. In 2001 he was awarded a scholarship by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to study quantitative methods at the Harvard School of Public Health, where he graduated with an MPH in 2002. In 2003 he joined the Department of Health Policy and Health Services Research and Department of Periodontology at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine as Assistant and later as Associate Professor, where he pursued his interest in oral epidemiology and clinical outcomes research. He was appointed Professor of Oral Surgery at the University of Birmingham in 2007
His research focus is on clinical and epidemiologic research on determinants of oral diseases and oral health outcomes and their interactions with systemic disease, in particular cardiovascular and rheumatic diseases, as well as the efficacy and effectiveness of dental treatment modalities, particularly in Oral Surgery, Periodontology and Implantology. He is a member of the European Centres for Dental Implantology.
He has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH/USA), the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR/UK) and the European Union.
Stefan Serban DMD, MPH, HMSEE’15, PhD
Stefan is a public health dentist currently in specialty training at Public Health England. He completed his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Thomas Dietrich and Prof. Iain Chapple and serves as chair of the Healthcare Special Interest Group of Harvard Club UK.
Victoria Leung AB’91, MBA
Victoria is a former investment banker with significant experience in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry. She is the events co-chair of Harvard Club UK.
