Harvard Emmanuel College Dinner
As the Lionel de Jersey Harvard Scholar at Emmanuel College, I have the pleasure of inviting you with the Harvard Club of the United Kingdom and Emmanuel College to the annual Harvard Dinner, which will be held on Saturday the 22d of June, 2013 at Emmanuel College, Cambridge.
We are delighted to announce that the renowned scholar and politician Baroness Onora O’Neill of Bengarve Ph.D ’69, LL.D ’10 will be the guest speaker. Life peer Baroness O’Neill is the Chief of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), a prolific author on political philosophy and ethics, international justice and bioethics. Amongst her many positions, she was a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Cambridge, a former principal of Newnham College, Cambridge, and a previous president of the British Academy. The title of her after dinner talk is "Real arguments for press freedom".
This event is a wonderful opportunity for Harvard graduates living or studying in the United Kingdom to meet, share memories of Harvard, and enjoy a formal evening in the College where John Harvard was himself a student. You are warmly welcomed by this year’s Harvard-Cambridge Scholars: Eva Gillis-Buck, Mikaël Schinazi and Chenzi Xu, and me.
The Harvard Dinner is very popular and is at times oversubscribed. The dinner is limited to one hundred and twenty guests due to the size of the Hall, and replies will be handled strictly in the order of receipt. Therefore, please apply as early as possible by the Monday 10th of June deadline. Applications received after the Hall is filled will be returned.
We ask that you restrict yourself to one guest. The price of the dinner is £58 per person for HCUK members and one guest, £63 for non-members and their guest, and £38 per person for recent Harvard College graduates (AB ¢09 - ¢13) and current Harvard students. Please note that all non-Harvard graduates will be at the full rates. You will receive a formal pour memoire card to confirm your place(s) at the dinner in June.
The Harvard-Cambridge Fellowship and the Harvard Club of the United Kingdom subsidises the cost for recent graduates and students. We wish to thank them both for their generous support.
Drinks will be served from seven o’clock to seven forty-five in the Old Library. The dinner will commence at seven forty-five in the Emmanuel Hall. Dress is black tie.
If you are planning to spend the night or the weekend in Cambridge, we recommend that you arrange accommodation now. Cambridge is crowded in June and college rooms and hotels fill up quickly.
We hope many of you are able to make time for the Harvard Dinner. The Harvard Club of the United Kingdom, my fellow scholars and I all look forward to seeing you in June. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at my e-mail address or Joan Porter MacIver, HCUK Past President and Executive Committee member. Please note that the deadline of 10th of June for this event is a strict one, and as a courtesy to the Master’s Office of Emmanuel College, which helps us so devotedly with this event, we ask that you adhere to this request.
If you have any problems then please contact Verity at vll@me.com
