Wednesday, 5th June, 2013 (Please note that this is a date change)
12 noon to 2:30 pm
The Polish Club, 55 Exhibition Road, London SW7
Guest Speaker: Amanda Foreman
Please join us in welcoming Dr Amanda Foreman, award-winning author of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, and A World on Fire: An Epic History of Two Nations Divided. Amanda was our guest speaker in 1999 and we are delighted to welcome her back to tell us about her recent publications and current research: The World Made by Women: A History of Women from the Age of Cleopatra to the Era of Margaret Thatcher,
Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire was a number one best seller in England and best seller for many weeks in the United States, winning The Whitbread Prize for Biography in 1998. Critical acclaim for A World on Fire: An Epic History of Two Nations Divided was unanimous, earning Dr Foreman the 2011 Fletcher Pratt Award for Civil War History. In addition to The World Made by Women, her new work includes a BBC series: The Georgians – “taking the concept of The Tudors with an “18th-century twist.” (from interview with ‘The Women on the Web’). She has served, and continues to serve, on a number of juries including the Orange Prize, the Dan-David Prize, the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize and the Man Booker Prize.
Dr Foreman was born in London, brought up in Los Angeles, and educated in England. She attended Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia University. She received her doctorate in Eighteenth-Century literature from Oxford University in 1998. She lives in New York with her husband and five children.
Amanda’s books will be for sale before and after lunch, so please bring cash or a cheque as we cannot take credit cards. We gather at noon for drinks, followed by Amanda’s talk at 12.30. Lunch follows at 1:15 pm with two courses and coffee for £28.00. Profits from the event will support the Seven College Conference Book Purchase Award, helping students from schools in Britain who attend any of the seven colleges to purchase books during their first year. We also host an annual event for students from our colleges on a junior year abroad programme in Britain.
