Monday, 27 February 2012
As 20th-century artists introduced untraditional materials and methods, the need arose to establish protocols to authenticate, preserve, and care for new kinds of work. The Harvard Art Museums’ Center for the Technical Study of Modern Art (CTSMA) applies cutting-edge science and technology to investigate artists’ materials and techniques and, through interviews, documents their processes and intentions for the future of their work. Whether determining the authenticity of paintings thought to be by Jackson Pollock, searching for Harley-Davidson paint to restore an aluminum sculpture by Donald Judd, or interviewing Ellsworth Kelly, Brice Marden, or Kiki Smith about their working methods, Narayan Khandekar will share these and other stories that reveal the exciting union of art and science at CTSMA – and sometimes cast those involved as art detectives.

The Fellows program is a membership organization that brings together alumni and others interested in art and supporting the teaching and research mission of the Harvard Art Museums. Founded in 1978, there are over 200 Fellows worldwide with particular concentrations in Boston/Cambridge, New York, and London.
Fellows are invited to regular events in each of these cities led by the curators of the Harvard Art Museums, along with local scholars, collectors, artists, and patrons. The events are designed to offer unique access and intimate engagement with works of art, and to allow Fellows to benefit from the insights and expertise of the Harvard Art Museums’ curators and conservators. Events include visits to private collections, artists’ studios, and behind-the-scenes programs at galleries, museums, and other arts organizations.
If you would like further information about joining the London Fellows, please be in touch with Ann Starnbach at ann_starnbach@harvard.edu or (617) 495-0350. All are welcome!
