first London biennial Sardis Lecture by the Director of Harvard’s Sardis Expedition

Please join us for the first London biennial Sardis Lecture by the Director of Harvard’s Sardis Expedition, Professor Nicholas Cahill, at 6:30 pm on Thursday 12th October, in the main auditorium of the London Stock Exchange (10 Paternoster Square, London EC4M 7LS – StPaul’s tube station), with a cocktail afterwards.

Please let us know if you might like to join us (the Exchange has a security desk at the entrance, and have asked us for a list of attendees).

The archaeological project at Sardis in western Turkey, sponsored by the Harvard Art Museums, is manned by an international team of some 65 scholars and students, and led by Professor Cahill. Recent work has focused on the palace of Croesus, famous for his wealth and for the invention of gold and silver coinage; on late Roman houses; on the largest synagogue in the ancient world; on the largest Roman arch in the world; and on dramatic evidence for earthquakes and other catastrophes that ended urban life, never to recover. The project’s full-time team at Harvard focuses on publication and research. For more information, www.harvardartmuseums.org; www.sardisexpedition.org.
