emmanuel college

Dear Harvard Graduate,

As the Lionel de Jersey Harvard Scholar at Emmanuel College, I have the pleasure of inviting you with the Harvard Club of the United Kingdom and Emmanuel College to the annual Harvard Dinner, which will be held on Saturday the 24th of June 2017 at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. The dinner is a major event in the club’s annual calendar.

We are delighted to announce that Dr Helen Curry will deliver the after dinner talk on ‘Endangered crops: industrial agriculture and the biodiversity crisis’.  Helen Curry is the Peter Lipton Senior Lecturer in the History of Modern Science and Technology at the University of Cambridge. She received her PhD in History from Yale University in 2012, and her BA in History and Science from Harvard University in 2004. Her research considers the histories of agriculture, biotechnology, and environmental change. She is the author of Evolution Made to Order: Plant Breeding and Technological Innovation in Twentieth Century.

This event is a wonderful opportunity for Harvard graduates in the United Kingdom and current Harvard students to meet, share memories of Harvard, and enjoy a formal evening in the College where John Harvard was himself a student. You are warmly welcomed by this year’s Harvard-Cambridge Scholars: Vivek Banerjee, Tamara Fernando, Ramya Rangan and me.

The Harvard Dinner is very popular and is at times oversubscribed. The dinner is limited to one hundred and twenty guests due to the size of the Hall, and replies will be handled strictly in the order of receipt on line. Therefore, please apply for your places as early as possible before the Monday, 12th of June deadline. Applications received after the Hall is filled will be unsuccessful and a waiting list will be kept.

Please apply for your ticket(s) through the link below. The price of the dinner is £63 per person for fully paid up HCUK members and non-Harvard students (limited to one guest at this rate), £75 for non-members and their guests and any additional guests for HCUK members, and £46 per person for recent Harvard College graduates (AB ¢13 - ¢17) and current Harvard students. Concessions will be made for Harvard graduates who are current students in the UK. Please note that all non-Harvard current students will be charged at the full HCUK members’ rate. You will receive an automatic email receipt to confirm your place(s) at the dinner in June when you have paid and no tickets will be issued for the dinner.

Drinks will be served from seven o’clock to seven forty-five in the Master’s garden or in the Old Library in case of rain. The dinner will commence at seven forty-five in the Emmanuel Hall. Dress is black tie.

If you are planning to spend the night or the weekend in Cambridge, we recommend that you arrange accommodation now [http://www.visitcambridge.org/accommodation]. Cambridge is crowded in June and hotels fill up quickly.

We hope many of you are able to make time for the Harvard Dinner. The Harvard Club of the United Kingdom, my fellow scholars and I all look forward to seeing you in June. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Joan Porter MacIver, HCUK Past President and HCUK Harvard Dinner Coordinator and me. Please note that the deadline of 12th of June for this event is a strict one, and as a courtesy to the Master’s Office of Emmanuel College, which helps us so devotedly with this event, we ask that you adhere to this request.
