About Dr. William Hanage:  Dr. Hanage studies the epidemiology and evolution of infectious disease. In normal times, he combines theoretical modeling approaches with other sources of data like genome sequences to understand transmission, and how pathogen populations evolve in response to interventions like vaccines or antimicrobials. His class covers topics including the emergence of new infections and pandemics. He has authored over 140 papers on topics from the 2009 H1N1 pandemic to the emergence of new species in bacteria, and his work has been recognized by a young investigator award from the American Society for Microbiology, and the Fleming Prize from the Microbiology Society. Alongside his research on the current pandemic, he has been attempting to help the public understand the emerging science and evidence – which can shift on a daily or even hourly basis.
